State track: Not much tradition, but this boys' team takes early lead

AGWSR of Ackley started the day with one state track title in school history. The Cougars have tripled their total.
Isaac Montes edged Lisbon’s Austin Springsteen at the finish line to win the 3,200 in Class 1-A and then he gave the Cougars a lead in the 4×800 that stood until anchor Sully Hofmeister crossed the stripe.
“I can’t believe it,” Montes said. “We were all nervous (and thinking) we could do this. I was like, ‘I’ll try to get a good enough lead for us and if I do it, you guys have to sustain. Push it. It may hurt, but it’ll be worth it in the end.’ And it was.”
Nearly two hours earlier, Montes held off Springsteen by .01 seconds to become AGWSR’s first state champion in a long distance event.
“I looked to the side a little bit (at the finish),” he said. “I know you’re not supposed to, but I had to make sure. I was pretty confident I had won at the end.”
The Cougars, who also claimed a second-place finish from Clay Meinders in the shot put, surged to the top of the 1-A team standings with 28 points at the conclusion of Thursday’s first session. Lisbon is second with 18.
