State volleyball: Dike-New Hartford again topples familiar foe for 2-A title

CEDAR RAPIDS, Ia. — No. 1-ranked Dike-New Hartford topped No. 2 Western Christian in the Class 2-A state championship for the third straight year.
Dike-New Hartford won the 10th state title for the program, including five for Dike, with the 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 victory Friday at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Brooke Morgan and Briana Weber combined to smash 31 kills. The team finished 45-1, with its only loss to Kansas Class 5-A state champ Lenexa St. James Academy, a team that is nationally ranked.
Western ended at 45-3. Jade Schaap led her team with 14 kills. Haley Moss and Ema Altena both added 13.
Weber was named captain of the all-tournament team. Dike-New Hartford’s Morgan and Rachel Koop were joined on the all-tournament team by Western’s Alissa Pollema, Moss and Jamie Gesink.
“We know that we were probably going to meet in the state championship with them,” Dike-New Hartford outside hitter Sadie Eden said. “It’s the best feeling ever to get that third title.”
Three programs have won more state volleyball titles than Dike-New Hartford. Dubuque Wahlert owns the Iowa best with 17 crowns.
Dike-New Hartford joined 5-A Bettendorf and 3-A MOC-FV of Orange City as repeat champs this season.
