State's all-time winningest volleyball coach staying at Ankeny High

The state’s all-time winningest volleyball coach is staying put.
Ankeny coach Dave Whims has decided to remain at Ankeny High School next year, when the school district splits into two high schools with the opening of Ankeny Centennial.
“I am going to stay with the south,” Whims said, referring to the current location of Ankeny High School. “I am an Ankeny Hawk.”
Whims earned his 900th career victory last season, when he guided Ankeny to a 30-7 record and a trip to the inaugural Class 5-A state tournament. The Hawkettes advanced to the semifinals before losing to Iowa City High.
Whims has led Ankeny to 12 state tournament appearances in 13 seasons at the school. The Hawkettes won back-to-back state titles in 2004-05 and again in 2008-09.
“Any time you’re splitting your team up and you have to go one way or the other, it’s a tough decision,” Whims said. “It’s kind of like having two kids of your own and you have to decide to coach one of them and not the other.”
Whims has been preparing for the split for a long time.
“When we started all this four or five years ago, I tried to do my best to develop both sides of the town,” he said. “That’s why we do all the camps and clinics that we do, so I think the future looks really bright for both teams.”
Some of the top players on last year’s Ankeny squad, including CIML player of the year Megan Ballenger, will remain on the south side. Others, such as all-stater Jaali Winters, will play for Ankeny Centennial.
In the end, Whims simply didn’t want to move across town.
“There’s good talent on both sides,” he said. “I just didn’t want to change schools.”
