SHEBOYGAN – On the drive to Pine Hills Golf Course near Sheboygan for Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional golf meet, Oshkosh West’s Wyatt Stickney and Logan Handy contemplated what kind of score it would take to advance to the state meet.

“We were discussing what would make to state and 77 was the number we felt was going to make it,” Handy said.

And both Oshkosh West golfers hit the mark.

Stickney tied for second place at the sectional with a 76 and Handy finished fourth with 77 as both players earned trips to the state meet at University Ridge next week.

It will be the first trip to state for both players and the first time a West golfer has made it to state since the Wildcats qualified as a team in 2009.

“It feels good,” Stickney said. “I just hit the fairways and greens and two-putted because it was kind of hard to read those greens. Couldn’t really make any birdies.”

Stickney actually got off to a rough start on his round with a string of bogeys after taking a par on the opening hole.

But the senior settled down and finished his round with 12 straight pars.

“I just thought about how the conditions were tough for everybody because nobody would be shooting that great,” Stickney said.

Handy said he played a very consistent round, dealing with the wet conditions and was definitely happy to shoot the 76.

“There wasn’t any key holes; it was just a consistent solid round,” the junior said. “I didn’t have any blow-up holes. It was just kind of slow and steady.

“It’s going to be a new experience (at state) and I’m just glad me and Wyatt get to go. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Stickney finished tied with Manitowoc’s Sasha Oosting, five shots behind medalist Tyler Siech of Plymouth. Handy was the next individual.

Oshkosh North couldn’t recapture the magical round it had at regionals and shot a 372 to finish last among the eight teams.

Paul Christman shot an 82 and Nick Bauer had an 85 to lead the Spartans.

Team scores: Neenah 321, Plymouth 325, West Bend East 334, West Bend West 336, Kaukauna 339, Sheboygan 340, Fond du Lac 349, Oshkosh North 372

Division 2

ONEIDA – A talented Berlin squad had a rough round at last year’s sectional meet and missed out on earned a trip to state.

That wasn’t the case this season.

Led by Drew Dretske’s 78, the Indians finished in second place, 10 shots ahead of Winnebago Lutheran to earn a spot in next week’s Division 2 state tournament field.

“It’s really exciting because we were really disappointed last year,” Berlin coach Conrad Falk said. “The kids that came back this were really determined to try to get back this year. That disappointment really drove them to practice really hard and really be focused.

‘And so it’s really neat to see them accomplish that goal.”

Green Bay Notre Dame won the sectional title on its home course at Thornberry Creek with a 312, while Berlin was next with a 342.

Dretske’s round landed him in a five-way tie for second place five shots behind medalist Connor O’Neil of Green Bay Notre Dame. It also continued the senior’s strong play this season.

“(Drew) has developed more confidence this season,” Falk said. “He always played well, but when it came to some big matches he lacked the confidence. This year, he’s developed that confidence and he just believes every time out he’s going to shoot in the 70s.”

Ripon’s Michael Lueptow was also in the group at 78 and garnered one of the three individual qualifying spots, marking the second straight season the Tigers will be represented at the state meet.

After Dretske, Sam Marks had an 86, Alec Huggins finished with an 88 and Michael Falk shot a 90 to round out the scoring golfers.
