Preliminary activities for the Mirabito STOP-DWI Holiday Classic on Friday conclude with the Slam-Dunk competition, tentatively scheduled to begin around 7:45 p.m. at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Doors open at 5 p.m., with the inaugural Aldo Rossi Jr. Memorial game pitting members of local police agencies against one another scheduled for a 5:30 tip-off. Rossi, a Port Dickinson police officer, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2008.
The 3-point shooting competition is scheduled to begin at about 6:40. Local participants in that will be David Loewen and Elloy Delarossa (Binghamton), Nick Chilson and Max Marshall (Johnson City), Kyle Gallagher and Jake Sinicki (Maine-Endwell), Zach Wentlent and Justin Ekstrom (Greene), Cody Barnes and Mike Sutton (Norwich), and Grant Eggleston and Robert Olsen (Seton Catholic Central).
The tournament proper is to get under way at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, with Binghamton vs. Maine-Endwell the first of 20 games in the three-day event.
