SW8 kicks off bowling season

By

The Southwest Eight High School Bowling Conference kicked off its 2013-14 season on Sunday as 36 two-person male-female teams competed in a Scotch Doubles Tournament at AMF Lanes in Sturgis.

Following an opening qualifying block of three games involving bowlers from the six Southwest Eight schools — Pennfield (including members of the Panthers’ 2012-13 MHSAA Division 3 state champion girls’ squad), Lakeview, Coldwater, Marshall, Sturgis and Jonesville — the top 16 duos advanced to match play.

Winning the tourney was the tandem of Haylee Harmon and Buddy Bailey of Coldwater, which defeated another Coldwater duo — Dana Bailey and Austen Reichhart — 186-174 in the final.

The format used was mixed team, three games in the opening qualifying block, with the top 16 in total pins advancing to the round of 16 match play. During match play, involving single games, the higher score advances.

In Scotch Doubles, in the first game, the girls threw the first ball and the the boy went for the spare. In the second game, the boy started and the girl threw at the spare. In the third game, duos had the choice of who would start. If one partner threw a strike, the other person would throw the next ball.

Following are round-by-round results from Sunday’s event:
