DUBLIN – Westfield fans were fired up after their game one win over Tattnall.

The Hornets were just one win away, from winning everything at the Southern Pines Park in Dublin, Ga.

Game two was a much different story.

Tattnall’s Kendall Hardy knocked a three-run homer off the scoreboard in left field, making it 4-1 in the fourth inning. The Lady Trojans’ momentum carried into the fifth.

Catcher, Jade Moncrief added her own three-run shot, to give Tattnall a 7-1 lead. Tattnall poured it on with a seven-run sixth inning, to wrap up game two 14-1.

With a drudging like that, the Tattnall faithful had good reason to believe the blue and gold would march on to success in game three.

Tattnall jumped to a 4-0 lead early in the game, and didn’t look back. With two outs in the seventh inning, it all came down to Kirsten Albright and the defense.

Sierra Roquemore scooped up the ground ball at third. She tossed it to Allie Gordon at first. Gordon tagged, and Tattnall had won the title.

Coach Joey Hiller preached for his girls to win the “last game they played.” This was the team’s first fast pitch title. (Tattnall has five slow pitch championships to its name.)

“We took a tough loss there, and rebounded the right way,” said Hiller. “The girls refocused, won two ballgames, and we finally got the state championship we’ve been working so hard for all these years.”

Senior pitcher, Kirsten Albright, wasn’t ready to quit after the game one loss.

“We just said, ‘we’re not done,'” said Albright. “We still have games to play. We still have innings to do. We still have outs to make. We knew that it wasn’t over yet. And we knew what we came here to do was going to happen.”

Westfield lost in the state championship for the second year in a row.

Tattnall will have much of its championship unit back in 2014.
Only three seniors depart from this year’s roster.
