THE WINNER: Alaysha Johnson
School: Spring (Texas)
Athletic achievement: She won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.52 seconds and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.24 at the Class 5A state championship meet this spring, leading the Lions to fourth place as a team. Johnson’s title-winning time in the 300 hurdles ranked as the nation’s No. 2 performance among prep competitors in 2013 at the time of her selection.
Academic excellence: Johnson has maintained a 3.24 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of the Shattered Dreams program, which advocates against teen drinking and driving.
“It’s rare to find an athlete with as much heart, fight, love and dedication to the sport as Alaysha,” said Spring head coachKori Crampton. “Much of our team success has been due to her presence and unwillingness to accept defeat.”
THE FUTURE: Johnson will be a senior next year.
