This week's 10 high school football games to watch

Bassfield (5-0) at Jackson Prep (4-1)

The Yellow Jackets, who are ranked No. 10 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and No. 1 in 2A, bring their state-best 21-game winning streak to Flowood to face the Patriots, ranked No. 2 in Academy AAA. Bassfield is loaded with FBS prospects, led by Dandy Dozen and Ole Miss commit Alvin Moore. C-L Says: Bassfield 35-21.

Germantown (4-0) at Callaway (5-0)

The Chargers and Mavericks square off in a key Region 2-5A opener and are both off to blazing starts. Callaway’s hurry-up offense is led by two quarterbacks, including TJ Washington and Chis Mitchell. Germantown is led by Tyler Shell. C-L Says: Callaway 31-21.

Laurel (4-0) at Brookhaven (4-0)

The Tornadoes get their first taste of 5A football this week, when they travel to face the Panthers in their Region 3-5A opener. Brookhaven is led by Fred Trevillion while Laurel boasts a pair of talented sophomores: Omar Bayless and Octavious Cooley. The Panthers are tough at home. C-L Says: Brookhaven 27-20.

West Point (2-2)

at Oxford (4-0)

Many people think this could determine the Region 1-5A champion. The Chargers, ranked No. 8 in the Super 10 and No. 2 in 5A, haven’t beaten the Green Wave in more than a decade. To change that, they must stop West Point’s Aeris Williams, who’s had a lot of success against Oxford. C-L Says: Oxford 24-17.

Southaven (4-1) at Olive Branch (4-1)

DeSoto County rivals go head-to-head in 1-6A openers for both schools. Conquistador quarterback Ross Trail recently committed to Louisville and led a comeback win last week against Rosa Fort. Southaven hasn’t defeated Olive Branch since 2010. C-L Says: Olive Branch 27-24.

D’Iberville (3-1)

at Biloxi (3-1)

The Warriors and Indians meet up in 4-6A opener and have been two of the surprising teams in 6A so far this season. The Indians’ potent ground game is led by Devoriae Martin, while the Warriors hand the ball to Quantrell Reddix. The Indians get it done at home. C-L Says: Biloxi 28-20.

Madison Cent. (2-2) at Clinton (1-3)

Both teams coming off bye weeks as the Jags make the short trip down the Natchez Trace Parkway to Arrow Field to face their rivals. Arrows must find a way to stop Madison Central’s Trey Smith. Dandy Dozen defensive tackle Grant Harris leads Clinton defense. C-L Says: Madison 28-14.

Stringer (4-0)

at Cathedral (4-1)

Big matchup between two 1A teams ranked in the top five. Cathedral quarterback Thomas Garrity has thrown for 1,802 yards and 23 touchdowns, while Stringer’s Tevin Moore has rushed for 643 yards. C-L Says: Stringer 34-31.

Central Hinds (4-1) at Tri-County (4-1)

Both schools suffered their first loss of the season last week. The Rebels, ranked No. 4 in Academy AA, saw their 31-game winning streak come to an end. Tri-County is led by Trey Bozeman and Ryan Cothern. C-L Says: Tri-County 31-24.

Kemper Co. (5-0) at Philadelphia (4-1)

The Wildcats have been one of those under-the-radar teams so far this season under first-year coach Chris Jones. The Tornadoes, ranked No. 4 in 3A, are strong on defense. C-L Says: Philly 35-20.
