Lehigh’s preseason had a nightmarish start.
Meanwhile, Dunbar’s passing attack continued to be dynamic in a 46-0 win over host Lehigh on Friday in a high school preseason football game.
Dunbar quarterback Daniel Cobb threw two touchdown passes, ran for another and added 10 points from five, 2-point conversions. Cobb appeared to be seriously injured in the fourth quarter but Tigers coach Phil Vogt said it was a cramp.
Cobb completed 5-of-9 passes for 186 yards before leaving.
“We’got people who can throw it and people who can get it,” Vogt said. “With what we run and if personnel want to jam the box, we’ll go up top.
“Our guys this summer took a tour and won 7-on-7 tournaments at Mississippi State and the University of Alabama, and they beat some pretty stiff competition to do so.
“Yeah, we can throw the ball.”
Cobb showed wonderful touch on a 71-yard touchdown pass to Jaylin White, a 48-yarder to Robert Byrd and a 32-yarder to Reyshene Bronson.
Bronson also caught a 9-yard TD pass.
“He’s got more chemistry with each of us,” Bronson said. “I’m trying to get better and master it right now. This year, we want to make the best of it and take it to states.”
While the Tigers enjoyed their aerial assault, Lehigh buried itself early.
Two bad snaps had Dunbar starting at the Lightning 7 and 4. Lehigh quarterback Matt Yzaguirre, harassed all night by the Tigers’ blitzes, also threw an interception that turned into a touchdown.
All those mistakes led to Dunbar leading 32-0 after the first quarter.
Lehigh coach Nate Sund had no comment.
“Coach (Sammy) Brown does a great job with the defense,” Vogt said. “He’s been coordinating the defense the last four years. I just ignored it. I ask him, ‘What do you need?’ I let him go and he makes me look really good.”
