Tom's Pick: It's a big week for St. Cloud golf

Are you ready for some golf? Folks who spend time on the links have been anxiously anticipating a spring that seemingly was never going to come.

All of a sudden, it has cleared up and the grass is green.

It means two of the biggest prep golf events of the year are back-to-back on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

First, it’s the 40th Annual St. Cloud Apollo Invitational, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Territory Golf Course.

Apollo head coach John Lieser expects 18 teams to participate, though the lineup has changed since the tournament was initially scheduled.

New teams in the field include Edina and Detroit Lakes. Most of Apollo’s Central Lakes Conference opponents will be there, as well as a number of area teams. Defending champion Staples-Motley has a scheduling conflict and won’t attend.

Lieser said to watch St. Cloud Tech.

“Tech is very good this year,” he said.

On Thursday, the St. Cloud Country Club Invitational is scheduled. The girls play at 9 a.m., followed by the boys at approximately 1:30 p.m.

It’s another big event for St. Cloud prep golf and has another impressive field.

The Detroit Lakes girls and Staples-Motley boys are the defending champions and are expected.

It should be a good week for some golf.
