There’s a good chance that just maybe, the Rocori Spartans might be onto something in volleyball this season.
They’re experienced and loaded with good non-seniors, too.
The Spartans get a test to how good they really are comes at 7 p.m. Tuesday when Rocori is host to Alexandria.
“I think that’ll be a good test for us to see how we are,” Rocori head coach Ted Faber said. “They’re good. They lost a lot from last year. But they have a nucleus of gals who have played together a long time. They’re real scrappy.”
Alexandria is 2-0 in the Central Lakes Conference, having survived a 3-2 win over St. Cloud Tech.
The Cardinals are 5-3 overall, but all their losses are quality: 2012 Class 3A runner-up Eden Prairie, defending state Class 2A champion Marshall and Hill-Murray.
Alexandria is a perennial state tournament contender. Alexandria has been to the state tournament 11 times since 1991, winning state titles in ’95 and ’99.
“They’re fast,” Rocori junior Morgan Koshiol said. “They have a really fast offense. We really need to pick our speed by Tuesday.”
Rocori is also 2-0 in the CLC after beating St. Cloud Apollo 3-0 Thursday. The other 2-0 team in the CLC so far is conference favorite Fergus Falls.
The Spartans are 6-2 overall and have a nice mix of experience and talented non-seniors.
“I don’t want to sound too optimistic,” Faber said.”But we have some real good leadership.”
