The Sartell Sabres have been in this spot before.
Last season, they made a nice late-season run to advance to the section final against mighty Moorhead.
This time, both teams are both a bit of a surprise.
Third-seeded Sartell (7-3) plays No. 4 Moorhead (7-3) for the Section 8-5A championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium.
“That’s perfect,” Sartell senior Jackson Miller said. “That’s who we want.”
Moorhead is the two-time defending section champ. The Spuds beat Sartell 35-21 in last year’s championship game.
The victory earned Moorhead its 14th state playoff berth dating back to 1972 and the Spuds’ third in the 2000s.
Sartell, meanwhile, was denied its 11th state berth and first since 2009, when the Sabres were the state Class 4A runners-up to Totino-Grace.
“It’s exciting,” Sartell junior quarterback Brandon Snoberger said. “I was standing on the sideline watching it last year.”
Expect him to play this year.
Snoberger is part of an offense that has put it together since the beginning of the season, helping the Sabres to reel off six straight wins.
Snoberger was one of a number of new starters on offense at the beginning of the season.
“At the beginning of the season, we didn’t have much experience,” Snoberger said. “We’re more experienced ….
“I’m more confident and more relaxed back there.”
Moorhead is led by senior quarterback Tyler Eidsness, who ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries in the Spuds’ 30-20 win over top-seeded St. Cloud Apollo on Saturday at St. John’s University.
He also completed five of seven passes for 93 yards and another TD.
Facing Moorhead should be a challenge for Sartell.
