Tom's Pick: State baseball seeds are out, no surprises

By

The seeds went as expected for the two area teams in the state baseball tournament.

As expected, St. Cloud Cathedral got the top seed in the state Class 2A tournament, which is Thursday and Friday at St. Cloud’s Municipal Athletic Complex.

Not surprisingly, Rocori didn’t earn a seed in the Class 3A tournament, which is Thursday and Friday at St. Paul’s Midway Stadium.

No. 1-ranked Cathedral plays unseeded Luverne (20-4) at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dick Putz Field in the state Class 2A quarterfinals.

Rocori (16-8) faces No. 3 Lakeville North (19-4) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Midway Stadium in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

The rest of the pairings in Class 2A are: No. 5 Kasson-Mantorville (23-6) vs. No. 4 Hermantown (20-3) at 12:30 p.m.; Watertown-Mayer (16-8) plays No. 3 Minnehaha Academy (17-5) at 3 p.m. and Perham (16-5) plays No. 2 Delano at 5:30 p.m.

If Cathedral wins, it plays the Kasson-Mantorville/Hermantown winner at noon Friday at Putz. If the Crusaders (23-2) lose, they play at 10 a.m. Friday at Joe Faber Field.

The rest of the 3A pairings are: Wayzata (15-6) vs. No. 1 Coon Rapids (17-3) at 10 a.m.; No. 5 Forest Lake (18-5) vs. No. 4 Mounds View (17-6) at 12:30 p.m.; and Rochester Mayo (14-11) vs. No. 2 Minnetonka (21-6) at 5:30 p.m.

If Rocori wins, it plays the Mayo/Minnetonka winner at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Midway Stadium. If it loses, the Spartans play Friday at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.

The finals in all three classes are June 17 at Target Field.

For Cathedral, the matchup with the Cardinals is the same as the 2001 championship game. Cathedral won that one 6-4.

Cathedral has made 17 state appearances since 1976, winning state titles in ’77, ’80, ’88, ’01, ’03, ’07 and ’11. The Crusaders were runner-ups in ’87 and last season, losing to Holy Family Catholic 6-0 in the final. Cathedral’s all-time state tournament record is 30-15.

Luverne has made nine state appearances, the last coming in 2009. The Cardinals’ other state appearances came in 1972, ’88, ’89, ’90, ’95, ’01 and ’03.

Luverne has never won a state title, but was runnerup in ’01 and took third in ’90 and ’95. The Cardinals’ state record is 8-11.

Rocori makes its seventh state appearance. The Spartans won state titles in ’92 and 2010 and took second in ’91. The other appearances were in ’88, ’06 and ’07. Note that those last three were in Minnesota’s largest class at the time, with the ’06 and ’07 appearances coming in Class 3A.

The two state titles were in smaller classes.

Lakeville North has never been in the state tournament. However, before the Lakeville school district split into two high schools, Lakeville made state in 2000 and ’05, taking second in ’00 to Brainerd and winning the state title in ’05 by beating Grand Rapids.
