There are a dozen mostly good stories going into the state girls swimming and diving championships this week, and Jackie Braun is one of them.
She’s a senior diver from Sauk Rapids hoping to finish in the top eight, which would earn her Class A all-state status.
“I guess that’s the goal,” she demurred.
Braun took 13th as a junior and qualified as a sophomore, but did not advance to the finals.
“Not even close,” she said with a grin.
She was part of a four-person national signing ceremony Thursday at Sauk Rapids. Baseball teammates Tyler Bjork and Mat Meyer are headed to St. Cloud State.
Nicole Stedje will continue her volleyball career at Waldorf College and major in mathematics.
Braun is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to continue her diving career. She’s planning a major in dietetics.
But first, there’s one last state diving competition.
The meet begins at noon Monday for Class A and at 6 p.m. Monday for Class 2A at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis.
Swimming preliminaries continue Tuesday, with the finals set for noon and 6 p.m. Wednesday.
As usual, there is a bevy of area swimmers competing. Sartell should be in the top three and Melrose can place in the top 10.
It’s also the last official fall activity for the Times’ area, since no football teams advanced to the Metrodome.
Wish the swimmers and divers good luck.
