Toms River North advances in SJ Group IV


Strong play from all three singles positions has the No. 4 Toms River North boys tennis through to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV semifinals after its 3-2 quarterfinal win over Eastern on Tuesday. Adam Lefkandinos won his match at first singles for the Mariners (20-6) after he defeated the Vikings’ (15-6) Seth Rose 7-5, 6-2.

Mirish Shah and Dan Cuthber each won at second and third singles, respectively, for the Mariners. Shah defeated Jared Pearl 6-2, 6-2, and Cuthbert defeated Alec Feldstein 6-1, 6-3. The Mariners will play top-seeded Mainland Thursday at 3 p.m.


MANASQUAN 5, EWING 0: Andre Barbero won his match at first singles leading the No. 2 Warriors (11-4) over the Blue Devils (5-12) in a Central Jersey Group II quarterfinal match.

Craig Lapham also secured a point at second singles for the Warriors after he defeated Chris Unger 6-2, 6-2.

MONMOUTH 3, RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN 2: Ivan Romano secured a point at first singles leading the No. 5 Falcons (12-4) over the No. 4 Bulldogs (8-7) in a Central Jersey quarterfinal match.

Vanni Roa also won his match at second singles for the Falcons after he defeated Mike Mahedy 6-2, 6-2. The Falcons will play top-seeded Holmdel in a semifinal match on Thursday.

COLTS NECK 3, OCEAN 2: Andrew Vaysman won his match at third singles leading the No. 4 Cougars over the No. 5 Spartans (15-8) in a Central Jersey Group III quarterfinal match. Mudassar Zusi and Brandon Zhov also won their match at first doubles for the Cougars after they defeated Nikhil Sobti and Jacob Vernick 6-3, 6-2.

Jeff Chiu won his match at first singles for the Spartans after he defeated Tyler Spalding 6-0, 6-2.


LACEY 2, RB CATHOLIC 0: Kyle D’Autorio’s six kills, three blocks, two digs and three aces helped the host Lions (7-10) past the Caseys (13-7) in non-divisional action.

Alex Belinsky added four blocks and four assists.

For Red Bank Catholic, Kevin Brennan had four kills and eight digs. Ryan Farley added four digs and 18 assists. James Taylor contributed four kills and seven digs.

WALL 2, TR EAST 0: Ryan Donahue’s eight kills, seven digs and three aces led the visiting Crimson Knights (15-4) to a non-divisional win over the Raiders (2-16).

Mike Smith added 20 assists and two digs. Brady Donahue contributed seven kills, eight digs and two aces. Evan Turner paced the Raiders with six kills and five digs.

SCT UPDATE: The Shore Conference Tournament continues today with the quarterfinals.

In Bracket A, Top-seeded Southern Regional will host No. 8 Colts Neck at 4:30 p.m. No. 4 Toms River South will entertain No. 5 Red Bank Catholic at 4:30 p.m.

In Bracket B, it will be No. 7 Central Regional at No. 2 CBA and No. 6 Wall at No. 3 St. John Vianney at 4:30 p.m.


Point Beach boys basketball coach Nick Catania said that senior forward Riley Calzonetti committed to Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass) after there was a coaching change at LIU-Post, where he originally committed.

LIU-Post let Calzonetti out of his National Letter of Intent after the men’s basketball coaching change. Catania said Calzonetti will receive a full scholarship from Merrimack College.
