Tom's tips: Foley gets a wrestling test Tuesday in Annandale

By

The Foley Falcons popped up at No. 1 in the state Class 2A wrestling poll and Annandale/Maple Lake is a top contender in Foley’s Section 6-2A.

The two meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Annandale.

Annandale/Maple Lake is led by Nate Carlson (ranked No. 6 at 113 pounds) and Tanner Vassar (10th, 120).

Foley is loaded and deep and coming off a big invitational it was host to over the weekend.

Tyler Funk (No. 2, 126), Randy Jenson (No. 6, 138), Carter Nielsen (No. 5, 145), Luke Kelvington (No. 8, 170), Tyler Midas (No. 3, 182), Mitch Struffert (No. 4, 195) and Mitch Keeler (No. 7, 220) are all state-ranked.

This one will be a good test to see where the two programs are at in the early season.

The rest of the week, briefly:

Tuesday

* Albany at St. Cloud Cathedral boys basketball, 7:30 p.m.

These two should be contenders in the Granite Ridge Conference. The Huskies are led by junior guard Nick Raeker, senior wing Riley Voit and senior posts Dalton Finken and Kyle Zierden.

Cathedral is quick and athletic and has a multitude of offensive options, led by Brindley Theisen, Brady Schmit and Steven Neutzling.

* St. Cloud Apollo at Sartell boys hockey, 7:15 p.m. at Bernick’s Arena.

Both teams are Central Lakes Conference contenders and are playing generally well overall. Both have skilled offensive teams, so there could be some goals scored.

Thursday

* St. Cloud Tech at Apollo gymnastics, 6:45 p.m.

Tech’s good, sure, but Apollo’s also decent, led by Betty Grell. This meet usually brings out the best in both teams.

* St. Cloud Icebreakers at River Lakes girls hockey, 7:15 p.m. at Richmond Arena.

The River Lakes have been a pleasant surprise so far and the Icebreakers are again good.

Friday

* Alexandria at Sartell boys basketball, 7:30 p.m.

This is a really good matchup of CLC teams.

The Cardinals’ John Vogeler is one of the conference’s best players, as is Sartell’s Tom Bearson.

Saturday

* Apollo Invitational boys swim meet, noon.

Bemidji, Princeton, Sartell and Tech compete.

* Tech Invitational gymnastics meet, 1 p.m.

Cambridge, Eagan, Mahtomedi, St. Francis and Stillwater are among the teams competing.
