Tom's tips: Golfers gear up for state championships

It’s pretty much the last week of the prep sports season, though baseball’s state championship games extend to next Monday at Target Field.

We’re down to golf and baseball for the 2012-13 school year.

While no teams qualified, 11 area individuals are headed to their respective state golf meets Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Class 2A tournament is at The Ridges of Sand Creek near Jordan. The Class 3A tournament is at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. Class A is being hosted by Pebble Creek in Becker.

While the Times has no formal all-area team in golf, these 11 would all be candidates if such a squad were named.

In Class 2A boys, there is Albany’s Dave Schneider and Jordan LeClair, Rocori’s Logan Konop and Melrose’s Wes Dickhaus.

Dickhaus, a senior headed to St. John’s University to continue his golf career, was tied for 26th place at the 2012 state meet. LeClair, a senior, finished 77th. Schneider, a freshman, and Konop are new to the field.

In Class 2A girls, Rocori’s Marja Sorensen, St. Cloud Cathedral’s Lucy Gaetz and Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins’ Nicole Vossen are in the field.

Sorensen, a sophomore, took ninth last year. Gaetz, a senior headed to St. Cloud State, finished tied for 26th. Vossen, a sophomore, didn’t compete at state last year.

In Class 3A boys, St. Cloud Tech’s Ian Hiltner and David Scharenbroich are in the field. Hiltner is a sophomore and Scharenbroich is a junior. Neither competed in last year’s state meet.

In Class 3A girls, Tech’s Alexie Portz and St. Cloud Apollo’s Nikki Torgerson are headed to state. Portz is a junior who didn’t qualify for state last year. Torgerson, a sophomore, was tied for 29th last season.

All involved play their second rounds Wednesday. They seek top 10 finishes or, in Sorensen’s case, even better.
