Tom's tips: Sartell heads to state true-team (again)

By

No area program has had a prouder tradition in true-team track than Sartell’s.

The Sabres have made qualifying for the state true-team meet a habit and 2013 is no exception.

Sartell’s boys and girls head to the state Class 2A true-team meet at 3 p.m. Saturday at Stillwater.

For the boys, it’s the 22nd time in 24 years that Sartell has competed in the coaches’ association sponsored meet. The girls have been 18 of 24 years.

This season, Sartell advanced by winning the Section 5-2A title at perennial power Totino-Grace.

Both the boys’ and girls’ programs were defending state champions in true team, with the girls having won the title five years in a row.

“I’m very, very proud of how our teams did (at Fridley),” Kellerman said.

“Our girls are bunch of young, hard-working athletes. It was a huge victory for them.”

The girls beat Totino-Grace 639.5 to 616.5. The boys won 602 to 595.5.

Here’s a quick look at the rest of the week:

Today

* Sartell vs. St. Cloud Apollo baseball, 7 p.m. at Dick Putz Field.

Apollo is playing really well, having knocked off Rocori and Willmar in consecutive games. Sartell is coming off a big win over Sartell.

* St. Cloud Tech vs. Apollo/Sauk Rapids boys tennis, 4:30 p.m. at Apollo.

Tech has wrapped up the Central Lakes Conference title and will use this one as a tuneup for a nonconference match Tuesday at Edina.

Tuesday

* St. Cloud Cathedral at Becker softball doubleheader, 4 p.m.

Becker is closing in on the Granite Ridge Conference title and will be a factor in its section. Cathedral had a pair of tough losses Friday to Sauk Rapids and Little Falls.

* Rocori vs. Tech baseball, 7 p.m. at Joe Faber Field.

Rocori had a tough loss at Alexandria on Friday and Tech fell to Brainerd. Both these teams mostly have played well and this should be a good game.

Thursday

* Little Falls at Sauk Rapids baseball, 7 p.m.

Little Falls is ranked fifth in the state in Class 2A and is a Granite Ridge title contender, along with St. Cloud Cathedral and Albany.
