Tom's tips: Sartell should be competitive with Como Park

MINNEAPOLIS

It’s fun when you can say you’re the first.

The Sartell boys soccer team plays in its first state semifinal match at noon Monday at the Metrodome against St. Paul Como Park.

The Cougars (17-0-3) are the Class A tournament’s No. 1 seed and the next challenge for fourth-seeded Sartell (16-2-2).

“I’m looking forward to playing them,” Sartell senior Kellen Cameron said.

Como Park beat Waseca 2-1 Friday at St. Louis Park just before the Sabres beat defending state champion Rochester Lourdes 1-0 at the same location.

The Cougars got goals from Max Inskeep and Jacob Cohen with assists from Israel Guzman and Zach Lee.

Como Park outshot Waseca 23-9.

Como Park’s top scorer is all-stater Will Kidd, a junior who was moved to forward from midfielder. Lee was an honorable-mention all-state selection.

The Cougars lost 2-1 in the quarterfinals to St. Cloud Cathedral last season and return five letter-winners from that team, Como Park’s first state squad.

It should be a competitive match.

Here’s a brief look at the rest of the week. There are a slew of prep football playoff games that will be written about later in the week.

Tuesday

* Albany at Rocori, South Sub-Section 6-2A volleyball, 7 p.m.

The third-seeded Huskies (19-10) and second-seeded Spartans (20-7) met on Aug. 20 at the Albany Invitational, with Rocori winning 2-0.

A lot, obviously, has happened since then.

The Huskies have gained experience and are playing well, having won eight in a row and 11 of their past 12.

The Spartans are one of the section favorites, along with defending section champ Sauk Centre.

The winner advances to the South Sub-Section 6-2A final at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sauk Rapids. The North Sub-Section final is at 8 p.m. Thursday at Sauk Rapids.

The final will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday at the College of St. Benedict’s Claire Lynch Hall in St. Joseph.
