It’s clearly the biggest week of the spring prep sports season, with state tournaments in track, softball and boys tennis.
The state tournament field in baseball and boys and girls golf also will be set.
The biggest event on the schedule is the state track and field championships Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul. Look for Times sports writer Brady O’Brien’s state track preview in Thursday’s paper.
O’Brien also will have an advance to the state boys tennis tournament Tuesday. That tournament runs Tuesday through Friday in Minneapolis. St. Cloud Tech is headed back to state, as are a number of individuals from Tech, Becker and Foley.
Then, Eden Valley-Watkins competes in the state Class A softball tournament for the second year in a row. The Eagles compete at 9 a.m. Thursday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Watch for Times sports writer Frank Rajkowski’s preview in Wednesday’s paper.
And then there is baseball and golf, with teams still working to reach the state tournament.
Here’s a quick look at the week:
* Section 6-2A boys and girls golf championships, Blackberry Ridge, Sartell.
Staples-Motley is the favorite in the boys competition, though St. Cloud Cathedral has beaten the Cardinals’ at least once this spring.
Defending section champion Cathedral is going to be tough in the girls’ division, though Pequot Lakes and Staples-Motley certainly are favorites as well.
The two-day competition concludes Tuesday. At stake is a berth in the state Class 2A meet June 11-12 at The Ridges of Sand Creek near Jordan.
* Section 8-3A girls golf championships, Long Prairie Golf Course.
It’s another two-day event. Golfers from St. Cloud Apollo, St. Cloud Tech and Sauk Rapids compete.
* Section 8-3A boys golf championships, Greystone Golf Course, Sauk Centre.
It’s also a two-day event with the same teams competing. The Class 3A state meet for boys and girls is June 11-12 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
The state Class A boys and girls golf championships are June 11-12 at Pebble Creek in Becker.
* Section 5A baseball, St. John’s Prep vs. Pillager, 5 p.m. at Joe Faber Field.
This is a losers’ bracket game. The winner plays the loser of Hinckley-Finlayson and Osakis, who meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Faber. That game follows at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The final is Thursday at Faber. The winner advances to the state Class A tournament June 13 at the Mini Met in Jordan.
* Section 6-2A baseball finals, 5 p.m. at Dick Putz Field.
A second game, if necessary, follows. Rain last Thursday shoved some games back to Friday when this column’s deadline was. Play continued all day Monday at the MAC. Cathedral is the defending section champion, coming off a second-place finish in Class 2A in 2012.
