Tom's Tips: Tech tennis aims for state tournament berth

It’s a huge week in the prep tennis world as St. Cloud Tech attempts to return to the state tournament for the second straight season.

The Tigers play in the Section 8-2A semifinals against Brainerd at 3 p.m. Friday at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.

A win there sends Tech to the final, where the Tigers meet either Bemidji or Monticello. Those two play at 1 p.m. with the final tentatively set for 6 p.m.

The winner advances to the state Class 2A team tournament Oct. 22 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.

The Class 2A tournament will be seeded. Tech’s ranked 10th in state.

Foley is still kicking in Class A. The Falcons also are attempting to get to state.

In 8-2A, the individual tournament takes place Saturday at Fitness Evolution. Tech cleaned up in the South Sub-Section 8-2A tournament and could get several players into the state individual tournament.

A quick look at the rest of the week:

* Sauk Rapids vs. St. Cloud Cathedral boys soccer, 5 p.m. at Whitney Field.

This is part of a doubleheader. The Sauk Rapids and Cathedral girls play at 7 p.m.

Sauk Rapids’ boys team is 3-12-0. Cathedral is 9-2-3 and jockeying for a top seed in Section 8A. Sauk Rapids’ girls are 5-9-1. Cathedral is 9-4-1 and could win up with a top seed in 8A.

* St. Cloud Tech Invitational cross country meet, 4 p.m. at Oak Hill Community School.

It’s one of the big meets of the week. Teams participating are: St. Cloud Apollo, Brainerd, Duluth East, Little Falls, Monticello, Moorhead, Princeton, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, St. Cloud Cathedral, St. Cloud Christian, Willmar, Bemidji and Cambridge-Isanti.

* Sauk Centre at Melrose volleyball, 7 p.m.

Sauk Centre (10-0 West Central North, 21-2 overall) is heading toward a conference champion and second-place Melrose (8-2, 13-6) stands in the way.

* Sauk Rapids at Tech volleyball, 7 p.m.

A good metro match. Sauk Rapids (3-7 Central Lakes, 8-12-3 overall) lost 3-1 to Tech (6-4, 7-9) the last time the teams met.

* Sartell at Sauk Rapids football, 7 p.m.

The other rivalry football in the metro. Sartell (1-2 CLC South, 3-3 overall) is jockeying for position in Section 8-5A. Sauk Rapids (0-3, 0-6) has played everybody tough and is a scary sleeper in the conference and section at this point.
