The high school track season hit full speed on Thursday afternoon. Here are some of the highlights from meets around the county.

Girls track

MTAL Cluster Meet: At Stevenson, Santa Catalina won every running event, including the hurdles and the relays, and also won three of the five field events. Santa Catalina’s Onyx Gaston was double-event winner taking the 100 (13.25) and the long jump (15-0.75).

Carmel 82, King City 60: King City’s Jessica Davis shined winning four events — 100 and 300 hurdles, high jump and triple jump — for the Mustangs.

Carmel’s Maddie McKenzie won the 400 and 800 and Aniela Grych won the 1,600 and 3,200.

Marie Rogers won the long jump with a jump of 14-10.

Carmel 75, King City 67: The meet came down to the 4×400 relay team where Carmel’s team of Nick Girard, Conner Marden, Zach Oliveras and Max Yeater sealed the win for the Padres.

Carmel’s Max Schrock won the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and pole vault. Freshman Nick Lomardi won the high jump with a leap of 5-9.

MTAL Cluster Meet: At Stevenson, the top scorers in the boys meet were Soledad, Stevenson and Pacific Collegiate. Double-event winners included Marcus Banks of Stevenson who won the 100 (11.92) and 200 meters (24.16) and Diego Leon of Anzar who won the 1600 (4:45.17) and the 3200 (10:40.36).

Boys golf

MBL Gabilan Varsity Match 3: At Gilroy Golf Club (par 35), Hollister picked up the win, notching a team score of 195.

Palma was second (197), Salinas third (214), Christopher fourth (214), Monte Vista Christian fifth (235). MVC’s Ryan Slater earned medalist honors with a 34.

Rounding out the other top scores were Salinas’ Cory Watt (35), Hollister’s Nick Caputo (35), Hollister’s Ryan Han (37), Palma’s Jay Burlison (38), Palma’s Travis Winn (38) and Christopher’s Tyson Hill (38).

The next league meet is March 20 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

Alvarez 4, Pacific Grove 3: Five third-set breakers ended in victory for the Eagles.

Carmel 6, Salinas 1: At Salinas, where the Padres improved 5-1, 1-1. Carmel on Friday hosts Monterey.

Men’s Baseball

Hartnell 6, Gavilan 3: At Gavilan, where Sean Safko got the save and the Panthers scored in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. The Rams posted runs in the first, fourth and sixth. For Hartnell, Andrew Beard was 2-4. The Panthers (9-9, 4-2) at noon Saturday face Skyline at home.


Monte Vista Christian 2, Christopher 1: At Monte Vista Christian, winning pitcher Patrick Muller threw a complete game, striking out two and giving up four hits and two walks.

Nathan Bonsell took the loss. For the Mustangs, Nick Matiasevich was 2-for-3. Monte Vista (3-7, 1-4) on Friday travels to Christopher.

Hollister 4, Monterey 3: At Monterey, Hollister’s Josh George got three hits to lead the Haybalers past the Toreadores.

For Monterey, Jimmy Hill and Tyler Leidig, who has committed to San Diego State, both doubled and had one RBI. Monterey (3-4) and Hollister meet today in Hollister.

Palma 9, North Salinas 0: At North Salinas, the Chieftains improved to 7-1 and 3-0 in the MBL Gabilan Division.


North Salinas High 11, Live Oak 1: At North Salinas, Kaitlyn Doyle went the distance, striking out four and giving up three hits.

The Vikings scored seven runs in the fourth inning and Live Oak posted its lone run in the third inning. For North Salinas, Alyssa Salazar was 3-for-3 and Natalie Martinez was 2-for-3. The Vikings (4-2) host Santa Catalina today.

Gilroy 2, Carmel 0: At Gilroy, Padre pitcher Brittany File struck out 15 but took the loss in the shutout. For Carmel (3-4), Abby Robinson doubled and Nicole Caoili singled. The Padres host North Salinas on Monday.

Notre Dame 17, Soledad 1: At Soledad, Miranda Santiago pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing two hits in the Spirits’ win over the Aztecs.

For Notre Dame, Monica Alvarez-Corona was 2-for-3, Sarah Muzik was 2-for-5, Alissa Moreno was 3-for-5, Emily Nguyen was 2-for-4 and Marisa Given and Alyssa Nguyen both had two hits including a double.

Pacific Grove 3, North Monterey County 0: At Pacific Grove, Cierra Pieroni threw 42 strikes out of 48 pitches and gave up four hits in recording the shutout.

For the Breakers, Reeve Grobecker scored a run and stole two bases, Kendra Bell scored a run and stole a base and Abby Burnell was 1-for-2 with a RBI.

For the Condors, Alicia Perez was 2-for-3. Pacific Grove (4-3) opens league play Tuesday at Soledad. North Monterey County (3-5) opens league play Wednesday at home against Pajaro Valley.

Alvarez 5, Stevenson 4: At Alvarez, the Eagles’ pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and got a clutch home run from Magnuson.
