Phoenix Trevor Browne defeated Phoenix Carl Hayden Friday night 14-6 in a Division II, Section I contest behind the outstanding play of senior running back Isaias Ochoa.
Trevor Browne’s head coach Richard Helton said the team tried to establish the run and pass game evenly from the start of the game.
“Hopefully we’re going to have a balanced attack that we can have good run execution and pass execution,” Helton said.
Carl Hayden coach Jeremy Zimmerman stressed the importance of getting the offense going early on in the game.
“Not executing, momentum shifts in their favor, if we can avoid those mistakes early in this game will be a big help to getting us going in the right direction,” Zimmerman said.
Both teams came out trying to establish its running game but neither team could get momentum going.
Trevor Browne finally broke through with a 59-yard run from Joseph Romo with 6:01 left in the first half to put it up 7-0.
From that point on, Trevor Browne (5-2, 4-2) continued to pound it on the ground with Romo, Ochoa and Kumasi Edmonds, for which Carl Hayden had no answer.
Carl Hayden (2-5, 1-4) came out in the second half looking to make it a competitive game. Senior quarterback Jose Bevins found a streaking Amadou Gueye for a 59-yard score on its second play to come within one, but the point after was no good and put the score at 7-6 after three quarters of play.
Carl Hayden’s offense stalled the rest of the way after the big play to start the second half. Bevins struggled to get the ball off to his receivers consistently.
Carl Hayden continued to struggle on defense as Trevor Browne kept it on the ground and burned more time off the clock.
Ochoa was the key to the game for Trevor Browne. He finished with 143 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown late in the fourth and added five solo tackles on defense.
