Not many Manitowoc County wrestlers can claim to only have suffered one loss all season, but Two Rivers junior Ty Pelot is one of those individuals.
Pelot, the HTR Media Wrestler of the Year, finished his season with a third-place finish at the WIAA Division 2 State Individual Wrestling Tournament at 113 pounds and overall went 45-1 with 26 pins, nine decisions, three tech falls and one major decision.
“Ty will put in the time this off season to be a State champion during his senior year, that isn’t a concern for me,” Two Rivers coach Paul Gehrke said in an email. “We have also beefed up our tournament schedule for next season and I feel that will make all the difference.”
The lone loss on Pelot’s resume came to eventual State champion JJ McClelland, of Viroqua, in the quarterfinal round. After the loss, Pelot earned two decisions and a pin before pinning Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Ben Vosters in 1:40 to earn third place.
Pelot recently defeated McClelland with a 6-4 decision at a tournament earlier this month in Wisconsin Dells.
“Being in tournaments with tougher competition and in more close matches will put (Pelot) at the top of the podium next year at State,” Gehrke said.
