Trumansburg senior Anthony (Tony) Mekos has been named the 31st Annual Dean Winters Interscholastic Athletic Conference (I.A.C.) Oustanding Senior Golfer for 2013.
The Trumansburg Blue Raiders won the I.A.C.’s Large School championship, held Wednesday, May 22 at the Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Elmira, New York. Winning by 47 strokes at a score of 404, Blue Raider’s individuals medaled in overall top spots at the championships. Top teammate and freshman Danny Lapp medaled in first place with a 75 while Mekos shot a 77, medaling in 2nd place. Fellow teammates Aaron Oliver medaled with an 83 while teammates T.J. Eighmey (84) and Bryce Zdyb (85) helped round out the top score for the team. Mekos also lead the Blue Raiders, scoring a 78 for a third place finish at the Section IV Class C Golf championship on Monday, May 20, held at the Maple Hill Golf Course in Marathon, New York.
Mekos, who will be attending Ithaca College in the fall, has been playing golf since he was 2 years old with his family. Along with being part of the Trumansburg varsity golf team since the 7th grade, Mekos has attended the Cornell Golf Camp Program as well as the 2011 Elite Junior Golf School at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He was featured, along with other junior golfers in the December 2011 PGA Magazine for their completion of the program. He is currently a member of the Trumansburg Golf Club and the Country Club of Ithaca.
