Call them whatever nicknames that incorporate three, trio or anything else that implies the number three.
Oshkosh West swimmers Adam Tuchscher, Taylor Steeno and Luke Laibly lived up to them on Tuesday.
The three combined for five individual wins and each were a part of at least one of the Wildcats’ two relay wins in West’s dual meet victory over Oshkosh North/Lourdes 113-65 at the 20th Avenue YMCA.
Steeno got things kicked off for the trio, besting Laibly in the 200-yard freestyle with at time of 1:54.03, less than a second better that his West teammate.
Then, Tuchscher rattled off two consecutive event wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.
Laibly picked up his lone individual win in the 100-yard freestyle and Steeno followed that up with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle to stretch the Wildcats lead over North/Lourdes.
Even though they weren’t the best times for the Wildcats top swimmers — as West has been on a marathon of meets the past couple of weeks — coach Carrie Bores was happy to have them pick up the wins.
“They had some good wins but not their best times right now,” she said. “They’ve been nursing it. But I’m happy with where they are right now. I’m more concerned about their health.
“The guys that have been bringing in the big points, they’ve been doing a nice job.”
West did have a really good swim out of junior Adam Long in the 100-yard breaststroke, as he dropped two second off his time to take first less than a second in front of teammate Mitchell Slezak.
“That was a big breakout swim for him,” Bores said.
West also got victories in the two freestyle relays in the victory.
North/Lourdes was paced by a solid night from Ryan Revolinski. Revolinski picked up two impressive individual wins in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.
“To be honest, I think I could put him in almost anything and he’d have a shot,” North/Lourdes coach Kris Soper said. “That’s what I like about Ryan. He’s very well-rounded.
“I want big things from him. I want him to make it to state.”
He was also a key part of the 200-yard medley relay team, along with Connor Wilson, Tyler Wilson and Aiden Beam, that bested the West team of Slezak, Steeno, Nate Somers and Ryan Scholl by just over a second in what was one of the closest finishes of the night.
“Their times came down today,” Soper said of her relay team. “Hopefully, by the end, who knows.”
Diver Max Zellmer also took home a first place finish, winning the event with a score of 230.65.
This meet comes nearly at the end of the dual meet season and both teams are tweaking things, hoping to get their times down even more before the championship season hits.
“We’ve been trying to work on little fine things,” Bores said. “If the times aren’t right there, we look at what did you do differently right now that we can still tweak. That’s what we are trying to look at.”
“We are still doing a lot of practices,” Soper said. “I’m hoping they are peaking. Then we’ll hit them soft and let them taper a bit and see where we are at.”
