Tucson Catalina Foothills and Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep overcame deficits to win the Division II boys tennis titles Saturday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

The singles championship featured Alex Bose from Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge and Mike Lee from Catalina Foothills. Bose won a close first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2). Bose was up 5-1 in the second set, but Lee fought back to win the set 7-5.

“I started getting a little more energy, and I was able to bring some energy in,” Lee said about his second set comeback.

In the third, Lee had a 3-2 lead when he starting cramping in his legs, eventually leading to a medical timeout. After the timeout, play resumed and was neck and neck until Lee won the match by winning the third set tiebreak 10-8. Lee won on his second match point after double-faulting on his first one.

“After I lost that first set I was really, really mad at myself,” Lee said. “In the third set I was just thinking, ‘just try to outlast him.’ ”

The doubles title match was between Luke Carstens and Adrian Cordova from Notre Dame Prep and Cody Petford and Adam Knox from Ironwood Ridge. Ironwood Ridge won the first set 6-4 as both teams started slow, with each team slow to get started, being broken for each of their first service games.

The second set was all Notre Dame. Carstens and Cordova turned the match around by winning seven games in a row and eventually 11 out of the last 14 to take the win and the doubles title 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Cordova and Carstens said that they needed to start anew after the first set loss.

“We lost in the semis last year in a three-setter,” Cordova said. “We really wanted to comeback this year and go through.”
