Top point guard blogs about winning a state title and hosting college coaches for in-home visits
Tyus Jones is the top-ranked point guard and No. 2 overall prospect in the ESPN 60 for 2014. Some analysts consider Jones to be the nation’s top floor general, regardless of class. That kind of clout has heavyweights like Kentucky, Duke, Michigan State and Kansas, among others, all giving chase. Jones, a junior at Apple Valley (Apple Valley, Minn.), has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.
What’s up everybody!
I haven’t blogged since we won the state championship so let’s start with that.
It was just a great accomplishment for our school and for our team. We had great support from the fans and the community and it was fun for us. We worked really hard all year and overcame a lot. It’s just so much more fun when you earn something and we really earned this.
Next week we’re gonna have a Pep-Fest to celebrate it. It’s for us and our wrestling team because they won states too.
Of course, now that we won it, the buzz is all about us repeating next year. All the local media is talking about it pretty heavy because we’ll have a big chunk of our team coming back and that’s definitely what our goal is.
Other than that school is going pretty good. I’m not going to the prom this year because I’ve got a tournament to go to that weekend. I’ve just been looking forward to starting AAU.
I run with the Howard Pulley Panthers and I think we’re gonna be able to make a lot of noise this season in the EYBL.
Last week I started having coaches come by for in-home visits and that was just a cool experience. Duke, Baylor, Ohio State and Michigan State all came in and sat down with us and talked about how I’d fit in to their systems.
Just to have college coaches sitting in my living room was crazy to me. I mean to see Coach K walk through my door was surreal. Coach (Tom) Izzo at my table… It’s all a blessing. It was pretty special. We’ll never forget that.
We basically just reiterated things we’ve talked about before like Coach K talked about he wanted to use me and how well he thinks I could run his team. Coach Izzo talked about how well things would play out if I came there. All of them basically were saying the same things they’d been saying for a while.
It was just fun to see them and hangout with them for a while. It was really laid back and chill. We had some appetizers for them. A lot of the coaches weren’t really hungry so we didn’t cook a whole meal.
I talked to my boy Jahlil (Okafor) after the visits to compare how his visits and my visits went. We talked about similarities and differences and things like that. And, yes, we’re still planning to play together in college.
I don’t plan to cut the list down anymore.
I’m looking at the early signing period in November, and I’m hoping to have a decision made by then. I mean you never know, but that’s what I’m hoping for.
I want to take my five official visits in the fall. Not sure where to just yet though.
Now I’m looking forward to Kansas coming for an in-home either Monday or Wednesday of next week. I’m not sure which day yet. That’s all that I’ve got planned as far as visits go.
OK guys you know I always appreciate you reading. I’m gonna let you guys know how AAU is going and everything else in my next blog so check back soon.
I’ll talk to you then.
