Connecticut basketball commit Courtney Ekmark, the 2012-13 Gatorade Arizona Girls Basketball Player of the Year, won't have a chance to lead St. Mary's (Phoenix) to its fourth consecutive Div. I state title.
In an e-mail to the East Valley Tribune, St. Mary's athletic director Greg Fahrendorf said Ekmark, a 6-foot guard, will skip her senior season and be home-schooled.
Ekmark's dad, Curtis, resigned as St. Mary's coach in June. Five St. Mary's players, who helped the program go 87-3 over the last three years, moved on to Division I schools.
"They've all been friends since they were eight years old," Curtis Ekmark told the East Valley Tribune. "I think maybe Courtney figured it was time to turn the page a little bit."
Max Preps reports that Ekmark is expected to play for a boys AAU team coached by her dad.
