UPDATED: Maryland Running Back Wes Brown Arrested Wednesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA 9) — It is not the kind of news Maryland athletics wanted to receive over the holiday weekend or any day for that matter.

A well known student-athlete, running back Wes Brown, is in jail for second-degree assault, theft and illegal wiretapping.

9-Sports confirmed that on Wednesday, Brown was being sought after by Baltimore City Police. The department’s spokesperson, Jeremy Silbert, said Brown is a person of interest in an open, non-fatal shooting investigation from last month. Silbert told 9-Sports detectives were conducting a follow-up investigation on Wednesday and contacted the local police jurisdiction for help locating Brown.

Baltimore City Police along with College Park Police found Brown at the 43-hundred block of Knox Road near Maryland off-campus housing.

Sargeant Aaron Davis says Brown assaulted a police officer and fled on foot before being obtained again. Bail for Brown has been set at $2,500. Brown was released Friday and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Upper Marlboro on July 31.

Maryland Athletics released the following statement on Friday: “We are extremely concerned that one of our student-athletes, Wes Brown, was arrested Wednesday evening. This is a matter that we take very seriously. We have been in contact with the local authorities and will continue to cooperate throughout the entire process. The University of Maryland has suspended Brown, and he is not permitted to participate in any athletic-related activities.”
