Urbandale volleyball coach beats alma mater East for third time this year

Urbandale volleyball coach Liz Baethke has spent 28 years in the CIML — half of those with East, the other half with the J-Hawks.
Baethke’s seventh-ranked team improved to 15-2 after defeating her alma mater 25-9, 25-13, 25-13 on Thursday. It was Urbandale’s third win over the Scarlets this year.
Before leaving for Urbandale in 2000, Baethke was head coach at East for five years. She was an assistant on Bob Savage’s East softball team for four years before that. And she was a multi-sport athlete for the Scarlets from 1986-1990 — her picture hangs on the East High wall of fame.
“My mentor, Bob Savage, kept saying maybe I should get away from East and start fresh,” Baethke said. “He said that would be the best thing for me because he felt I was under some shadow there. So even though I was fine and loved it there at the time, I felt this was a situation I couldn’t pass up.”
After 14 years, it’s safe to say Baethke is a J-Hawk.
“The facility (at East) has changed, and there aren’t many people left there that were such a big part of my life,” Baethke said. “Being in the gym brings back some memories, but it’s so tough because I just don’t know many people there anymore.”
East coach Stephanie Carroll saw her team fall to 2-9 in her second season with the Scarlets. She’s pleased, though, with the direction of her program.
“Our defense has been playing better. We beat North and Hoover and those were good matches, but I want them to start beating those really tough teams,” Carroll said. “They’re getting that experience and that confidence, so hopefully sometime soon we’ll beat one of those big teams.”
East senior Maggie Long had one of her better performances of the season, Carroll said. Long shared the positive outlook of her coach.
“The past two times we played Urbandale, we definitely learned a lot about them,” Long said. “And this was definitely our best game against them. Once we get better at not making the small mistakes, we’ll be able to really compete with better teams at that level.”
Urbandale, a state qualifier last season, is 10-0 this month, but senior Emilee Erichsen said there is still room for improvement.
“I was slightly disappointed with how we played tonight,” Erichsen said. “But for having a new lineup, we managed to make it work. I’m still proud of our team.”
The J-Hawks are back in action Saturday at the Waukee Invitational. The Scarlets will play at home against Roosevelt on Tuesday.
