THE WINNER: Matthew Coffey
School: Brighton (Cottonwood Heights, Utah)
Weight: 165 pounds
Athletic achievement: He has scored nine goals and passed for 14 assists this season, leading the Bengals to a 15-1 record entering the Class 5A state playoffs, where they are scheduled to face Riverton (Utah) on May 14. A two-time member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Olympic Development Program, Coffey was a First Team All-State selection by the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune.
Academic excellence: Coffey has maintained a 3.74 GPA.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of a food bank, clothing drives, and a program to collect soccer equipment for refugee children.
“Coffey is a very good, very skilled player,” said Lee Mitchell, head coach at Alta (Sandy, Utah). “He demands a lot of attention, and he’s great at setting his teammates up for scoring opportunities.”
THE FUTURE: Coffey has signed with Portland.
