AURORA – In a rematch of last year’s 5A state championship, Cherokee Trail hosted Valor Christian on Saturday with Valor pulling out the win 42-23.
Both teams scored on their opening drives. Cherokee Trail then took advantage of turnovers and lead 16-7 midway through the second quarter.
The momentum began to shift Valor’s way when Brandon Biggs sacked Cherokee Trail quarterback Aric Johnson. The sack forced a fumble, which was picked up by David Corral and run back 44 yards for the score. Valor would take a 21-16 lead into the half.
Cherokee Trail would get within five points down 28-23 early in the fourth. But then Stanford-commit Christian McCaffrey ran away with it. McCaffrey rushed for 228 yards and scored four touchdowns including a pick-six on defense.
Valor Christian will play Fairview for the 5A state championship Saturday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
