Michael Sawyers, a 6-2, 308-pound rising senior defensive tackle from Ensworth, committed to Vanderbilt over Ole Miss, Tennessee and Miami on Wednesday.
He has 17 offers, including Miami and six Southeastern Conference teams.
“I think (Vanderbilt) is a very good academic place, and Michael is a very bright kid and I think that academically it’s a good fit,” Ensworth coach Ricky Bowers said. “And then athletically I’m not certain what their needs are, but they would not have recruited him did they not think he could fit into their system well.”
Sawyers said education was his top priority and one of the top reasons for his school selection.
“It was about education,” the defensive lineman said. “Vanderbilt offers a good education and when you see what Coach (James) Franklin and his staff have done on the field that makes it a very attractive place.”
