Visiting Buckeye Verrado ran past the host Buckeye Hawks to the tune of an 8-0 final in a Division III girls soccer match Friday night.

Verrado, which improved to 13-2 heading into the final stretch of the regular season, outhustled and outplayed Buckeye in a complete team effort. The score was 4-0 at the break and Verrado kept the pressure on the entire game.

“The team played really well,” Verrado coach David Hopkins said. “We really tried to work on finding the open person. There were a couple of easy goals that we had because they made the extra pass.”

Defense the main issue for Buckeye, as the backline couldn’t prevent Verrado’s forwards from getting behind them and attacking the goal. Buckeye’s keeper made several saves but faced too many shots to continually keep the ball out of the net.

Hopkins praised juniors Kristen Miller and Kelly Smith for their performance in creating opportunities on offense, while also giving junior Celeste Cunningham credit for keeping the defense together in the shutout effort.

It was a disappointing loss for Buckeye as its record falls to 5-8-1 on the year and a win against nearby Verrado could have been a silver lining and something to build on looking toward next year. Hopkins gave them credit for their physicality and relentlessness

“(Buckeye) play(s) physical, they don’t give up,” Hopkins said. “You see a lot of those teams that get down four or five goals and the game’s over, but they play all the way to the whistle and it was a good test for us.”

This was the second time the teams had faced off in the past week as Verrado topped Buckeye 8-0 on its home turf just three days before. Verrado takes on Goodyear Estrella Foothills on Monday while Buckeye visits Buckeye Youngker on Tuesday.
