THE WINNER: Brittany Basinger
School: Woodgrove (Purcellville, Va.)
Athletic achievement: She has led the Wolverines to a 12-4-1 record and a berth in the Dulles District Tournament semifinals against Tuscarora (Leesburg, Va.), scheduled for May 21. Basinger scored 15 goals and passed for six assists in 17 games despite missing two games in April to attend a training camp with the U.S. Soccer Under-20 Women’s National Team. A 2012 Youth All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, she was a member of the U-17 Women’s National Team at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Azerbaijan last fall.
Academic excellence: Basinger has maintained a 3.86 GPA.
Exemplary character: A member of the Woodgrove High yearbook staff, she has volunteered locally at sports clinics for disabled children and as a babysitter at her church.
“Brittany Basinger is a beast and I hate to go up against her as a coach,” said Gabriel Ascunce, head coach of Heritage (Leesburg, Va.). “She is intense, fast, physical and great with the ball. She has such composure that allows her to finish and score goals.”
THE FUTURE: Basinger has signed with Penn State.
