PUNTA GORDA – After falling behind by 21 points in the first 16 minutes of the game, the Dunbar Tigers came roaring back for a 34-28 spring football victory over Charlotte High Friday night.
The Tarpons scored on their first three possessions while the Dunbar offense could barely get out of its own way. But quarterback Daniel Cobb got the Tigers rolling on their next possession with consecutive scrambles of 28 and 14 yards, then completed the drive with a one yard sneak to get Dunbar on the scoreboard. The Tigers got the ball back in the final seconds of the half, and Cobb hit Robert Byrd with a 49-yard TD pass to make it 21-12 at the half.
Bob Rice got the Tigers within one point on the opening drive of the third quarter with a 37-yard scoring run, while the Dunbar defense was clamping down on the Charlotte offense, holding the Tarpons to just one first down in the period.
“It took us a while to adjust to the Wing-T,” said Dunbar coach Phil Vogt.
Byrd finished with 7 catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Cobb was 11 for 16 passing for 212 yards and ran for 92 yards on 16 carries.
