The Spackenkill and Millbrook volleyball teams will face off Sunday for the third time this season.
The teams’ first meeting came in the regular season. The second occurred in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League title game.
Sunday’s 2 p.m. showdown at SUNY New Paltz means even more, as the top-seeded Spartans and second-seeded Blazers will compete for the Section 9 Class C championship, having both earned semifinal victories Friday.
“I do like our chances, but they’re a tough team,” said coach Shawn Stoliker, whose Millbrook squad topped sixth-seeded Tuxedo on Friday, 25-12, 25-15, 25-17. “It’s going to be an awesome match.”
That’s because Spackenkill has won both previous meetings with Millbrook, and the Spartans will look to sweep the season series.
“It feels really good to advance,” Spackenkill coach Cassi Diamond said after her Spartans beat fifth-seeded Rhinebeck Friday, 25-16, 25-19, 25-16. She said the Spartans “work really well together,” and “the flow within the game itself is always up.”
Taylor Mohan paced Spackenkill’s semifinal effort with 13 digs and eight kills, while teammates Nur Sher (13 assists, nine digs, eight aces, eight kills) and Brianna McKee (10 kills, 10 digs, two aces) ensured the sweep.
Rhinebeck countered with Samantha Sherwood (12 kills, five blocks, ace) and Bailey Hutchins (eight kills, three aces).
In the Blazers’ semifinal sweep, Meredith Dignan contributed 12 assists, six kills, four aces and four digs. Audrey Ouimet added 11 kills, three blocks and an ace, Alex Worthington added three kills and a block and Amanda Critelli poured in 12 digs.
