THE WINNER: Courtney Schwan
School: Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, Wash.)
Athletic achievement: The state’s returning Gatorade Player of the Year, she led the Lions to a 35-0 record and a second straight Class 4A state title this past season. Schwan recorded 498 kills, 284 digs, 89 service aces and 38 blocks while posting a hitting percentage of .449 and a kill percentage of .552. A 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association First Team Under Armour All-American, she is a two-time Class 4A State Player of the Year and State Tournament MVP. She is also a four-time Narrows League MVP.
Academic excellence: Schwan has maintained a 3.55 GPA.
Exemplary character: An accomplished pianist, she has volunteered locally at a daycare center, at the Fife Police Halloween Carnival and Fife City Santa Run and as part of multiple service initiatives through her church youth group.
“Courtney Schwan doesn’t just beat you with her power,” said John Reopelle, head coach of Rogers (Puyallup, Wash.). “She has such good court vision that she can beat you with the short game as well. She hides her off-speed shot better than most, but sets it up by hammering the ball at you a few times to get you on your heels.”
THE FUTURE: Schwan has signed with Washington.
