Class D, Division VII

LAST YEAR: 3-5

Watkins Glen came up one win shy of earning a Section 4 Class C playoff berth last season. The Senecas, now in Class D as a member of Division VII, want to put themselves in the playoff chase again.

“Two years in a row it has come down to Week 8 in the C division and this year it’s Week 7 that it will hopefully come down to,” coach Lou Condon Jr. said. “If we get in, then fantastic. If we don’t, it’s unfortunate, but it will be a rebuilder for next year.”

The Senecas lost some talented runners to graduation, but they return four starters on the offensive line, including guards Bryce De La Osa Cruz and Colton Arcangeli. Brady Bond and Keith Rekczis give the team two talented quarterbacks, with Tony Simiele back at wingback.

Watkins Glen uses a run-oriented double-wing attack and Condon said the line will be counted on heavily to lead the way.

“There’s no question our offensive line is going to be the key,” he said. “They work hard in the offseason and our offense, the way it’s set up to work is based upon how our offensive line plays. The running backs and wingbacks get the stats, but it’s all about the offensive line and how they perform.”

This is the third year as coach for Condon and he said this year’s team has benefited from being around his system.

The Senecas use a 3-3 stack defense and will need more consistency this year. Seven players who started on defense return, with the Senecas using a “committee” approach on both sides of the ball to replace graduated players.

“Our motto is to be aggressive on defense,” Condon said. “If you can stop people on defense, that’s the name of the game.”
