Last year’s 6-5 loss in the 10th inning to Wisconsin Dells in the Class A Legion baseball state final didn’t sit well with the Waupun baseball team. So meeting up with them again was something the team wanted.
The players got what they wanted and even more, after a 9-5 win to send them into their second straight state final appearance. They will face the winner of the Westby/Viroqua game which was played late Saturday night.
Waupun got things going early, after Nate Hopp led off the game with a double and Jordan Daane later drove him in with a single. A Bryce Bucholz grounder scored Daane after the Dells commited an error to make it 2-0 after one inning.
In the third, Hopp led off once again with a double, and then RBI singles from Daane and Avery Armga made it 5-0.
The Dells then made a comeback in the fourth and fifth innings, when they loaded the bases up each time with no outs. They managed to score two runs in each inning to cut Waupun’s lead to 5-4. In the sixth, Waupun scored on an error and Daane drove in his third run with a sac fly making it 7-4. They added two more runs in the seventh.
Arik Tavs picked up the win.
Waupun 6, Chilton 3
Facing elimination, the Waupun bounced back after a loss Thursday with a 6-3 win Friday over Chilton.
Jordan Moul was in the groove for six innings, allowing only three hits and zero runs until giving up three in the top half of the seventh inning to pick up the win. He allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked one.
