Wave prevail on emotional night

By

When the Fort Myers Green Wave staggered out of the gate Friday night and could manage just two first downs in the first quarter, they appeared to be flat.

But coach Sam Sirianni Jr. said it was actually the opposite — they were too amped up by the pageantry of the 12th annual Sam Sirianni Day and the memory of murdered teammate JoJo Brunson.

After they ratcheted it down a notch, they piled up 48 points in the second and third quarters on the way to a 58-7 trampling of Bishop Verot at Sam Sirianni Field at Edison Stadium.

“They put it to us for a quarter,” Sirianni said. “Once we realized we had to put it into gear, we picked up the pace. I’m proud of them for doing that. That’s going to be so big this season. How do you play in that third quarter? The coaches made some adjustments at halftime, but it was all on the kids to take it from there.”

Brunson would have been a big part of the Wave offense. But he was shot to death April 20 in the Renaissance Preserve public housing development.–just four months before what would have been an electrifying junior season.

On the backs of their helmets, the players wore a black circular decal with “JoJo” in green.

“He’s a part of us,” Sirianni said. “He’s always going to be a part of us. His spirit was with us tonight.”
