Groton running back Zeke Wright was selected to the New York State Sportswriters Association all-state football team on Wednesday.

Wright, who was named to the second team in Class D, averaged 8.3 yards per carry on his way to a 1,268-yard, 14-touchdown season. He rushed for a season-high 266 yards and four touchdowns in a season-opening 51-14 victory over Odessa-Montour. The Indians finished 8-3 and lost to Tioga in the Section 4 Class D championship game.

Three players from Waverly, including first-team picks Zach Cooney and Dylan Gutierrez, were also selected.

Cooney and Gutierrez were picked to the Class C team, along with teammate Dan Hyland, who was a third-team choice. Waverly’s Austyn Bostwick received honorable mention.

In Class D, Elmira Notre Dame’s Matt Watkins was a second-team all-state pick. Teammate Tom Agan received honorable mention.

The all-state selections for classes B, C and D were announced Wednesday. All-state picks in classes AA and A are expected to be announced next week.

Cooney, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior, was chosen to the all-state first team at defensive back for the second straight season. He had four interceptions and 56 tackles to help Waverly advance to the Section 4 Class C final and finish with a 9-1 record, including a forfeit victory.

As a quarterback, Cooney passed for 1,054 yards and ran for another 457. He tossed 19 touchdown passes without an interception and also ran for nine touchdowns.

Gutierrez, a 6-1, 180-pound senior, was a first-team pick at linebacker after coming up with 63 tackles in nine games. He also excelled at running back, rushing for 729 yards and six touchdowns on 86 carries.

Hyland, a 5-9, 140-pound senior, kicked four field goals and was good on 33 of 36 extra points.

Watkins, a 6-2, 220-pound senior, was a second-team Class D pick at defensive line. He led the Crusaders with 77 tackles (58 solo, 19 assists) and had eight quarterback sacks and seven other tackles for loss. He also was a force at offensive guard.

Bostwick, a 5-10, 150-pound senior, had 42 catches for 569 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Agan, a 6-3, 195-pound junior, ran for 847 yards on 115 carries and caught 21 passes for 285 yards. He had 52 tackles and two interceptions on defense.

Maine-Endwell’s Nick Sorrenti and Jake Haddock were named Co-Players of the Year in Class B. They helped the Spartans win their second consecutive state title and finish with a 13-0 record.

Other Class B first-team all-state picks from Section 4 were Chenango Valley senior offensive end Zack Collins, M-E junior linebacker Darrell Woolfolk and M-E junior defensive back Alec Wisniewski.

Also earning first-team honors in Class C was Chenango Forks senior defensive lineman Jack Barnett.

Tioga senior two-way standout Tyler Spires was a first-team Class D pick at linebacker. Teammate Carter Jackson, a junior, was a second-team pick at offensive line.
