WIAA boys basketball: Valders fall in overtime at Sturgeon Bay


Tied 38-38 at the end of regulation, the No. 9-seeded Valders boys basketball team was held scoreless in the extra period to fall 49-38 at No. 8 Sturgeon Bay on Wednesday night in a Division 4 regional opener of the WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament.

The game, which was originally scheduled to be played Tuesday night but was postponed due to weather, saw Valders (11-12, 9-9 Olympian Conference) start the second quarter on a 13-0 run and led Sturgeon Bay (14-8, 11-3 Packerland Conference) 24-17 at halftime.

No other information was provided to the Herald Times Reporter as of press deadline.

Kiel 47, North Fond du Lac 43

No. 9-seeded Kiel (8-15, 4-10 Eastern Wisconsin Conference) topped No. 8 seed North Fond du Lac (8-15, 3-11 Flyway Conference)) on the road in the Division 4 regional opener.

Down 9-8 after the first quarter, Kiel outscored North Fond du Lac 16-8 in the second quarter and held on for the postseason victory.

Jacob Winkel led the Raiders with 17 points while teammate Carter Voelker had 13 points.

Kiel was 17-of-31 on free throws to North Fond du Lac’s 7-of-14 performance.

Kiel will now be at No. 1 Oostburg (20-2, 16-0 Central Lakeshore Conference) on Friday at 7 p.m. The pair did not play each other in the regular season but have two common opponents.

Oostburg beat Two Rivers at home in early February 58-42 and at Plymouth in late November 56-43 while Kiel beat Two Rivers at home 56-45 in mid-December but fell on the road 68-42 earlier this month. Kiel fell to Plymouth 55-33 on the road in late November and 51-41 in an early January matchup.
