WIAA boys swimming: Area teams add State qualifiers

Late Saturday night the WIAA released its full list of qualifiers for the Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships, with Manitowoc Lincoln and the Valders-Brillion-Chilton co-op adding several additional qualifiers after Saturday’s sectionals.

Only the sectional champions were guaranteed a berth to State, with the next-best 18 times in Division 1 and 12 in Division 2 added as qualifiers.

The Division 2 meet will be Friday and Division 1 will be on Saturday, with both being held at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.

Besides automatic qualifier Aaron Hochkammer — who earned a birth with a sectional win in the 100-yard backstroke — Riley Neuser qualified for Lincoln in the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:48.20.

His qualifying time was good for third at the Neenah-hosted sectional that the Ships competed at on Saturday.

Also for Lincoln, the 200 medley relay team of Hochkammer, Kyle Heinzen, Dylan Neuser and John Cress advanced — they were third at the sectional with a time of 1:42.39 — along with 400 freestyle relay team of Riley Neuser, Damian Klemish, Dylan Neuser and Hochkammer.

That relay team was also third at sectionals with a time of 3:22.35.

Likewise, the Valders co-op earned additional qualifiers in all three relay events — the 200 medley relay (Jason Cleven, Jared Kasten, Riley Friedrichs and Micheal Evans), the 200 freestyle relay (Evans, Zachary Siikarla, Jerad Tayler and Friedrichs) and the 400 freestyle relay (Evans, Siikarla, Jordan Appel and Friedrichs).

The 200 medley relay was second at sectionals (1:46.9) while the 200 freestyle relay was third (1:31.29).

The 400 freestyle relay team was also third (3:23.53).

Individually, the Valders co-op added Evans in the 50 freestyle (22.53) and Friedrichs in the 100 freestyle (49.95).

Evans was third at sectionals and Friedrichs was fourth (49.95).

James Wise was the only automatic qualifier for the Valders co-op as he won the diving portion at sectionals with a 435.4.

Two Rivers and Kiel, the other Manitowoc County boys prep swimming programs, did not receive any automatic or additional qualifiers.
