WIAA boys tennis: Roncalli's Giesen advances

The Roncalli boys tennis team’s No. 1 singles player Brett Giesen split a pair of matches on Friday at the WIAA Division 2 Individual Tennis Tournament to advance to the fifth-place bracket where he will compete today.

Giesen (25-6), a junior and No. 5 seed, began the day by defeating Brookfield Academy sophomore and special qualifier Will Conley (15-8) 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. From there, Giesen fell to Green Bay Notre Dame senior and No. 4 seed Scott Wall (21-3) 6-1, 7-5.

With the split, Giesen advances to take on The Prairie School senior special qualifier Thomas Ware (23-7) today at 8:30 a.m.

Also in Division 2, Roncalli senior special qualifiers Ben Brotz-Joel Ledvina (14-11) fell to Dominican juniors and No. 5 seed Danny Uhen-Frank Wong (18-1). Brotz-Ledvina advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Thursday over East Troy’s Matt Miller-Tanner Braunschweig. The winner of that match had been incorrectly reported to the Herald Times Reporter on Thursday by the WIAA.

Also falling on Friday was Two Rivers’ No. 6-seeded pair of junior Brice Ruedinger and senior Brian Ruedinger (16-3) which fell to University School of Milwaukee’s Joey Harris and Spencer Haas (23-5) 6-2, 6-3.

The No. 10-seeded pair of Manitowoc Lincoln seniors Nick Schroeder and Jake Rohrer (21-5) fell Muskego’s special qualifying pair of junior Ben Ziolkowski and senior Nick Oleniczak (17-3) 6-3, 6-2.

“It was a tough day for the two seniors,” Lincoln coach Bob Feller said. “It was a very emotional afternoon, but they had great careers (at Lincoln) and they certainly made their mark.”
