WIAA boys tennis roundup: Lincoln pair headed for State

The Manitowoc Lincoln boys tennis team had its No. 1 doubles pair qualify on Thursday for the WIAA Division 1 State Boys Tennis Tournament.

Jake Rohrer and Nick Schroeder earned second place in their flight to advance to State, which will be held May 30-June 1 in Madison. The pair defeated De Pere’s Jake Neuville-Andrew Pleger 6-2, 6-4 and Suart Nett-Matt riley of Fond du Lac 6-1, 7-5. They lost to Neenah’s Matt Brooks-Andrew Juneau in the finals 6-4, 6-3.

Ethan Just fell in his first No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 for Lincoln while Mike Olson and David Wronkowski finished second at No. 2 doubles to fall short of a State berth. They beat Kimberly’s Grant Gorges-Aaron Mader 6-1, 6-1 before losing to John Price-Tyler Rosera of Neenah in the finals 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The pair is now hoping to achieve special-qualifier status for State.

Jonah Mrozinsky and Parker Wood finished third for the Ships in the No. 3 doubles flight. They first fell to Alex Hibbard-Nagesh Kanneganti 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 but rebounded to beat Leland Raymond-Nick Tyczkowski of Kimberly 6-1, 6-4.

Lincoln finished fourth as a team with 23 behind winner Neenah’s 51.

DIVISION 2 Kohler Sectional

Two Rivers’ No. 1 doubles pair of Brian Ruedinger and Brice Ruedinger went 2-1 to finish third and earn a trip to State.

The duo defeated Oshkosh’s Lourdes’ Gavin Galazka and Even Enders 6-0, 6-2 and Kohler’s Tim Valicenti and Kyle Struck 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. The pair’s loss came to Plymouth’s Steven Blend and Matthew Primozic 6-3, 6-4.

The Raiders’ No. 2 pair of Brock Gospodarek and Cameron Greene defeated Lakeland’s Nick Garcia and Levi Herrick 6-3, 6-2 but fell to Green Bay Notre Dame’s Nate Calawerts and Nick Williams 6-1, 6-1 to finish second and fall short of a State trip.

Also earning a second-place finish was Two Rivers’ No. 3 pair of Brett Kasper and Brett Linzmeier who beat Lakeland’s Mike Laurence and Cameron Clough 6-2, 6-0 before falling to Notre Dame’s Andrew Burnett and Zach Simonet 6-2, 6-2.

Roncalli’s No. 1 singles player Brett Giesen advanced to State by finishing third with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Newman Catholic’s Jose Larrain and a 6-1, 6-3 win over Xavier’s David Jumes while falling to Kohler’s Tyler Lewis 6-2, 6-2.

The Jets’ No. 2 Zach LeVene finished second to fall short of State. He defeated Newman Catholic’s Tomas Larraine 6-1, 6-4 and fell to Notre Dame’s Matt Frisk 6-1, 6-2.

The Jets finished fifth as a team with five points while Two Rivers tied for fourth with 17. Notre Dame won the sectional with 48.
