WIAA Cross Country: Local squads prepare for sectionals

All eight area cross country teams will be competing at the WIAA State Cross Country Sectionals on Saturday throughout Divisions 1-3.

Manitowoc Lincoln, the areas lone D1 school, is hosting its regional at Meadow Links North at 11 a.m. The Ships were led at the Fox River Classic Conference Meet by Michael Thompson who took 20th and Karly Rosinsky (28th).

Two Rivers, Roncalli, Valders and host Kiel will be competing in D2 at the Kiel cross country trail at 11 a.m.

The Two Rivers girls are coming off a perfect score at the Eastern Wisconsin Conference Meet, the first time that’s happened for either gender in the history of the conference. The Raiders top runners were Kristy Terp (first) and Nathan Grall (second). Also at the EWC Meet was Kiel, which was paced by Trenton Nickel (eighth) and Rachel Halbach (10th).

For the Jets and Vikings, Tomerot Lambert (fourth) and Hailey Hoffman (14th) led Roncalli while Derek Doescher (second) and Beth Evans (eighth) paced Valders at the Olympian Conference Meet.

Finally in D3, Manitowoc Lutheran, Reedsville and Mishicot will all be at Sheboygan Area Lutheran at 11 a.m.

At the OC meet, the Lancers’ Rachel Winter and Panthers Faith Lubner each earned top-five finishes, placing third and fifth, respectively, while Melissa LeCaptain (13th) paced the Indians girls. On the boys side, Mishicot’s John Egdorf (seventh) led all D3 runners and Brad Kasten (26th) and Nick Hein (36th) led Lutheran and Reedsville, respectively.

In order to qualify for State, a runner must either be a member of the top two teams at each sectional or finish as one of the top five runners outside of those two teams.
