With the exception of a first-half injury to standout senior running back Tony O’Krueg Wright, the Lourdes Academy Knights played about as dominant a football game as they could ask for in a Level 2 playoff matchup Friday night.
Charlie Noone threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes, O’Krueg-Wright busted off a 57-yard touchdown run and Kyle Hellmann picked off an Ozaukee pass and returned it 60-yards to take a big lead at halftime as Ozaukee fell 39-6 in a WIAA Division 6 matchup on J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.
Lourdes took the opening kickoff and marched 72 yards on four plays capped by a O’Krueg-Wright 57-yard dash. O’Krueg-Wright finished with eight carries for 103 yards before the injury in the second quarter left him on crutches for the rest of the game.
The Knights only had two blemishes in the game, and one came on the second possession of the game. After a Noone completion down to the Warriors 31-yard line, the Knights fumbled and Ozaukee recovered.
The defense more than made up for it on the very next snap, however.
Warriors quarterback Jacob Wolff dropped back to pass and was hit as he attempted a deep pass down the left sideline, and Hellmann picked it off and returned it 60-yards for a touchdown.
Noone then added a pair of touchdown passes before the end of the first half, then threw another one, a 26-yard lob down the left sideline to push the lead to 33-0, and Kyle Cerroni finished the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown plunge last in the fourth quarter to give
The offense didn’t punt until 4:55 left in the third quarter.
The Knights didn’t allow a first down until the fourth possession of the game, picked off two Warriors passes, recovered a fumble and had a pair of sacks. They also didn’t allow the Warriors to get on the board until the final moments of the third quarter with the game essentially in hand.
Ozaukee scored on an 11-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Nick Wojciechowski.
Cerroni and Micah Decker handled the running back duties in the second half with O’Krueg-Wright watching on the sideline, and though they both played well the offense lacked the explosion it had in the first half with O’Krueg-Wright busting off huge chunks of yardage at a time.
